{"id":3124,"date":"2015-11-02T12:43:33","date_gmt":"2015-11-02T12:43:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cramlingtonlv.co.uk\/?p=3124"},"modified":"2021-05-11T11:11:07","modified_gmt":"2021-05-11T11:11:07","slug":"another-fantastic-weekend-at-our-y7-residential","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cramlingtonlv.co.uk\/?p=3124","title":{"rendered":"Students and staff praised after record weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cramlingtonlv.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/GroupShot-15_blurred-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"group photos of our Year 7 students at the annual residential\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cramlingtonlv.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/GroupShot-15_blurred-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cramlingtonlv.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/GroupShot-15_blurred-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cramlingtonlv.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/GroupShot-15_blurred-120x80.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.cramlingtonlv.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/GroupShot-15_blurred.jpg 1239w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students and staff from Cramlington Learning Village have been praised for their behaviour and organisation of a record-breaking activity weekend at Dukeshouse Wood in Northumberland.<\/p>\n<p>For the 300 Year 7 students \u2013 supported by 40 teachers and support staff \u2013 it was the final stage of their transition from primary school to high school.\u00a0 It was also the first time many had been away from home on their own.<\/p>\n<p>The weekend was the fifth year running new starters at Cramlington Learning Village had been given the opportunity to get to better know their new classmates through working together to tackle challenges such as abseiling, archery and orienteering.<\/p>\n<p>The students stayed together in their home \u2013 or tutor \u2013 groups they joined when they first went to the school seven weeks ago.\u00a0 At Dukeshouse Wood, which is near Hexham, each group slept in the same dormitory, ate together, took part in activities together and also wore the same colour hoodie.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve-year-old Tanisha Leckie said: \u201cWhen we\u2019re working in the groups we get closer.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know some of them before but now we\u2019re really good friends.\u201d Charlotte Kell, also 12, said: \u201cI\u2019ll be more confident speaking out in class when we get back to school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julie Mosley, head teacher of Cramlington Junior Learning Village, said: \u201cTheir home group is like a family unit. They might be terrified of heights on the Zip Wire but the support from other members of their group keeps them going.\u00a0 \u201cThroughout their time at school we encourage them to be better than they ever thought possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of school life \u2013 at Cramlington or during stays or visits \u2013 the students are encouraged to develop behaviours which help them become successful learners. These are known as the Five Rs + 1: reflective, responsible, resourceful, reasoning, resilient and respect.<\/p>\n<p>Education visits co-ordinator and PE teacher Paul Steanson has led five Year 7 trips to Dukeshouse Wood. \u201cWe started with 200 and have gradually grown,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not compulsory so we\u2019re delighted that so many have decided to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The school helps some families pay for the visit and only 53 students decided not to go. \u201cNext year we\u2019re hoping that all 350 Year 7s will come.\u00a0 This is like moving the whole junior school en masse with all the support that entails.\u201d Year 8 students, who took part last year, volunteered to help this time.<\/p>\n<p>Chief instructor Katie Moorhouse said Cramlington Learning Village brings one of the biggest groups to Dukeshouse Wood.\u00a0 \u201cI look forward to them coming every year.\u00a0 It\u2019s so well organised \u2013 like a military plan \u2013 and we know there are not going to be any issues with bad behaviour.\u00a0 I also love their team hoodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Student Rubens Harbottle, 11, said: \u201cI was a bit nervous about the 3G swing, but if you think of it as fun it will be fun.\u00a0 This is better than being in class \u2013 no offence to the teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a long shower and an even longer reunion with their mobile phones, televisions and game consoles, the students were back at school on Monday morning writing about their experiences in their literacy lessons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students and staff from Cramlington Learning Village have been praised for their behaviour and organisation of a record-breaking activity weekend at Dukeshouse Wood in Northumberland.
