{"id":3486,"date":"2016-02-29T09:14:49","date_gmt":"2016-02-29T09:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cramlingtonlv.co.uk\/?p=3486"},"modified":"2021-05-11T11:11:49","modified_gmt":"2021-05-11T11:11:49","slug":"cramlington-student-wins-scholarship-to-eton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cramlingtonlv.co.uk\/?p=3486","title":{"rendered":"Cramlington student wins scholarship to Eton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3487\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cramlingtonlv.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/AdamShewry-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Adam Shewry With Mr Paterson\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cramlingtonlv.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/AdamShewry-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cramlingtonlv.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/AdamShewry-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cramlingtonlv.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/AdamShewry-1-120x80.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>A schoolboy from Cramlington is heading to the school of royalty, politicians, Olympic champions and Hollywood stars.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen-year-old Adam Shewry is one of only nine students throughout the UK this year to be offered a sixth form scholarship at the world-famous Eton College in Windsor, where fees are nearly \u00a312,000 per student per term.<\/p>\n<p>The Cramlington Learning Village student was chosen after days of gruelling interviews and tests at the school which in 576 years has produced 19 Prime Ministers \u2013 including David Cameron \u2013 and educated scores of successful, influential and famous people such as Prince William, Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne, adventurer Bear Grylls and gold medal rower Sir Matthew Pinsent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in a chemistry lesson and I was asked to go to reception,\u201d said Adam. \u201cUsually you only have to go to there if it\u2019s bad news or you\u2019ve done something wrong.\u00a0 But I walked into the head teacher\u2019s office and there was my dad with the letter saying I\u2019d been successful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adam \u2013 who last year passed his GCSE maths with an A* &#8211; only found out that Eton offered scholarships after watching a television programme.\u00a0 He went with his family for a visit and was so impressed that he applied for a place, along with around 200 other students.<\/p>\n<p>After receiving his personal statement, Eton invited Adam to spend four days at the school, where he sat the notoriously challenging entrance exam, and was interviewed by the head teacher as well as all the heads of department for his chosen A\u2019 Level subjects:\u00a0 Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Economics.\u00a0 When he was there, the UK ambassador to Russia and the deputy governor of the Bank of England paid visits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently that was not unusual,\u201d said Adam who is not 16 until June.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s a whole world of different opportunities. There is an image that Etonians are stuck up, but I didn\u2019t meet one student like that.\u00a0 They were some of the nicest kids I\u2019ve ever met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adam\u2019s success in winning a scholarship \u2013 even before his sits most of his GCSE exams &#8211; means the majority of his costs will be paid by Eton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be tough being away from family and friends but I always intended to go away to university \u2013 it\u2019s just coming two years earlier than I thought,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Adam is a gifted long-distance runner.\u00a0 He is a member of Morpeth Harriers and has been selected to compete for Northumberland in the cross country race at a national schools event.<\/p>\n<p>As well as his studies Adam is planning to join some of Eton\u2019s societies and pursue his enjoyment of rock climbing, cycling and swimming. He is even looking forward to wearing the school\u2019s traditional uniform of black tailcoat and pinstriped trousers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be a bit different from the uniform at Cramlington,\u201d he said. \u201cEverybody has been so supportive here.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t have asked for more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cramlington Learning Village\u2019s Year 11 Learning Manager Dave Paterson said: \u201cThroughout his time at school Adam has conducted himself impeccably, both academically and in his sport.\u00a0 He\u2019s reaping the rewards for the effort and attitude he has shown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe say to students to aim high and see where you get.\u00a0 But it just proves that if you put your mind to it you can achieve anything you want.\u00a0 It\u2019s an outstanding achievement and we are all extremely proud of Adam.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A schoolboy from Cramlington is heading to the school of royalty, politicians, Olympic champions and Hollywood stars.
